Ceiling Fan Wobbles — How to Balance It

Fix a wobbly ceiling fan. Balance blades, tighten mounting, and stop the shaking.

Tools Needed

🧰 Screwdriver, Balancing kit or coins/tape, Ladder

A ceiling fan that wobbles, shakes, or makes you nervous isn’t right. Most wobbles are easy to fix yourself.

Safety First

Turn off the fan and let it stop completely before working on it. Consider turning off the breaker for extra safety.

Check #1: Loose Mounting

The most common cause. Fans work loose over time.

Check:

  1. Get on a ladder and try to wiggle the fan body
  2. Any movement means loose mounting

Fix:

  1. Tighten the screws holding the mounting bracket to the ceiling box
  2. Tighten the screws holding the fan motor to the mounting bracket
  3. Make sure the ceiling box is rated for fans (not just lights)

Check #2: Loose Blade Screws

Each blade attaches to the motor with screws. These loosen over time.

Fix:

  1. Tighten each blade screw
  2. Don’t overtighten — just snug
  3. Check blade brackets too (the part between blade and motor)

Check #3: Warped or Damaged Blades

Wood blades can warp from humidity. Blades can be bent from contact.

Check:

  • Lay a yardstick across the blades (fan off) to see if they’re at the same angle
  • Look for bent or warped blades

Fix:

  • Replace warped blades (usually sold in sets)
  • Gently bend blade brackets to align blades (if the blade itself is okay)

Check #4: Blade Balance

Even if nothing is loose, blades can be slightly out of balance.

The balancing kit method ($5-10 kit):

  1. Clip the balancing weight to the middle of one blade
  2. Run the fan and observe
  3. Move the clip to each blade, testing each time
  4. Find which blade reduces wobble most
  5. Slide the clip along that blade to find the best spot
  6. Stick the permanent weight there

The coin method (free): Same process, but tape coins to the top of blades to test weight positions.

When to Call an Electrician

  • The ceiling box isn’t fan-rated (needs reinforcement)
  • The mounting is in the ceiling structure and feels unsafe
  • You’re not comfortable on a ladder

Cost: $75-150 for a service call to secure or remount a fan.

The Bottom Line

Most ceiling fan wobbles are loose screws — a 5-minute fix. If that doesn’t help, balance the blades with a $5 kit. Rarely is anything actually wrong with the fan itself.
